Specialization at an international level under the supervision of a so-called "college", e.g. European or American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, is a much more intensive and far-reaching specialization than German specialist veterinary training.
The aim of further training is to specialize at the highest level. After completing an intensive, precisely regulated training program, a very demanding examination must be passed before an international examination committee. After passing the examination, you are awarded "Diplomate" status. Diplomates usually work at universities or referral clinics after their further training in order to maintain and further improve the quality of veterinary medicine with their specialized knowledge and skills.
European and American degrees (Diplomate) can be obtained at the Small Animal Clinic in the following specializations
- Internal medicine (ECVIM or ACVIM)
- Cardiology (ECVIM or ACVIM)
- Oncology (ECVIM or ACVIM)
- Dermatology (ACVD and ECVD)
- Neurology (ECVN or ACVIM)
- Surgery (ECVS or ACVS)
- Reproductive medicine (ECAR)
- Sports medicine and rehabilitation
be obtained.
The prerequisite for participation in a residency program is an internship or adequate further training. Depending on the program, a residency lasts three to four years and must take place under the supervision of one or more Diplomates. Admission to the examination is only granted once all the necessary requirements have been met, such as completion of the prescribed clinical period, proof of publications and lectures at national and international level and a sufficiently large number of cases worked up in various special disciplines. The examination is held once a year as part of a European or American congress.
